The 21st March 2012 marks the 7th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day and for the first time this day will be officially recognised by the United Nations.
WDSD is held on 21 March (21/3) every year to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of chromosome 21 which causes the genetic condition Down Syndrome. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and understanding of a condition which affects approximately 1 in 800 births worldwide, and to promote the inherent rights of persons with Down Syndrome to enjoy full and dignified lives and be active participants in their communities and society.
Activities and events which take place on this day typically showcase the abilities and accomplishments of persons with Down Syndrome and encourage independence, self-advocacy and freedom for persons with Down syndrome to make their own choices.
To date, WDSD has been observed in over 60 countries around the world. Each year the voice of people with Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them grows louder but there is still a long way to go.
ACTION FOR HOLLIE ON WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
On 21st March 2012, from 9.30, HOLLIE’S ARMY will be assembling outside the Houses of Parliament, London to raise awareness of Hollie’s case.
Why that date and that location?
Two reasons:
1) It is ‘Budget Day’ and the British mainstream media will be there all day
2) It is also ‘World Down Syndrome Day’
So it is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness for the plight of HOLLIE GREIG!
Everyone who can get to central London is invited to come along – bring cameras, banners, placards, leaflets etc. Let’s do all we can to get ‘in shot’ of the mainstream media or, better still, get interviewed!!!
equality and diversity policies are just lip service if we don’t act on behave of the needs of those less able.
love for the day
